Life Skills Course of Study
Writing
/ Rhetoric (Gr. 9)
In
this course, students receive intensive practice in improving grammar
and vocabulary skills, in conjunction with writing full-length essays
and answering essay questions. The students learn about and
practice writing the various types of essays. Through peer
workshops, they hone their skills for editing, proofreading, and
revising. They also learn how to write a research paper, from
evaluating reliable sources to making a proper works cited page. Independent
Study (Gr. 10) The
purpose of this course is to give students the autonomy to gain new
knowledge on the subject of their choice. Students are expected to
work self-sufficiently and to manage their time responsibly while
becoming pundits, or experts, on their area of interest. Students are
responsible for journals, research, and reflective papers. By the
course’s end, students present an oral and written product on their
subject of interest and compose a portfolio. Personal
Planning & Growth—PPG (Gr. 11)
In
this course the students will delve into an introspective analysis of
personal values, intrinsic characteristics, and personal
inclinations. Personal reflection, journal writing, and seminar
discussions will challenge students. This self-analysis will then be
applied to the arduous task of the college search process. With a
strong instructional emphasis on SAT preparation, the course will
continue to prepare students for the college application process.
Students will explore the realities of finding appropriate
post-commencement options in the future. Senior
Seminar
A
capstone to the Life Skills classes, this course will challenge
students in the realms of theology and self-awareness. A heavy
emphasis is placed on reflection and writing. It culminates in the
“Love in Action” program that places students in service-oriented
settings to enable them to wisely devote themselves to the service of
others.
