Language Arts

The Language Arts experience includes guided study of literature, group reading and discussion, and independent reading. Students read novels, short stories, nonfiction, and other selected texts throughout the year. Several selections will overlap with their studies in social studies and science. Although a focus across the curriculum, Language Arts takes the lead in developing the skills of reading comprehension, process writing, and critical thinking. Vocabulary development and spelling instruction are developed from reading and student writing, but grammar and vocabulary are also drawn from a guided component. Writing includes the formation of basic paragraphs, as well as a wide range of creative opportunities to reflect on personal experiences.

Math

Students come with a wide variety of skills and experiences in math, making this an important year to ensure a solid foundation. Through the use of a very sequential program, they will study addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Other concepts include probability, estimation, and measurement. Problem-solving, computation, and hands-on experiences will be major areas of concentration. Students will discover multiple ways that math helps us make sense of our environment.

Social Studies

The study and exploration of the New Bern and North Carolina history will be the primary focus. This will be an exciting thread to be woven throughout the curriculum. Students can develop an appreciation for North Carolina’s variety of people, its geographical features and its history. Emphasis will be placed on the important impact of heritage and environment on influencing who we are and what we become.

Science

The course will offer an active survey experience that supports our environmental theme and ties in closely with our study of North Carolina. Such topics as water, weather, and sustainability will be explored. We will begin to look at the systems of the human body, especially how the digestive system works, how food is converted into energy for the body, and the role of good nutrition in our lives. Concepts will be taught using labs, activities, on-line resources, texts and group problem-solving. Fifth graders will have an overnight environmental experience with the Sound to Sea Program.

Study Skills

Students are introduced to methods for effective content area reading, note-taking strategies, and use of a homework planner. These strategies are modeled, monitored and reinforced throughout the year.

Enrichment

Teachers of the performing arts, as well as physical education will meet with students for art, music, and physical education. Where possible, their activities will coordinate with and support our core curriculum. Other areas to be integrated into the overall program include technology, geography, handwriting, keyboarding, service opportunities and advising. Students will participate in the weekly chapel service and special programs with the entire school community.
