World Language Course of Study


Spanish 1

The objectives of these courses are to introduce the students to a common vocabulary in meaningful contexts like greetings, questions and answers, members of the family, classroom words, pastimes, clothing numbers, vacations and months of the year. They also include using basic possessive adjectives, the present progressive and direct object pronouns and nouns. In addition to the traditional instructional strategies employed in these courses, teachers utilize Rosetta Stone software to enhance the mastery of conversation skills. With this basic information, we can build the skill for the next step.

Spanish 2

The objective of this course is to learn more complex grammar concepts, vocabulary and further develop skills in listening comprehension, reading, writing and oral expression. Also included is learning the preterite and imperfect tenses, double object pronouns, comparisons and superlatives, adverbs, and familiar and formal commands. Again, students will utilize Rosetta Stone to nurture mastery of the spoken language. Since brief reading on culture and costumes are introduced at this level, the students are going to be familiar with some traditions, festival and holidays, historical places, geography and the economy. Portions of the class will be conducted in the target language. Pre-requisite: Spanish 1

Spanish 3

The objective of this course is to broaden skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Complex vocabulary and grammar concepts like the present subjunctive mood, past participle, present, past and conditional perfect, the future, and commands will be studied. The students will be challenged to comprehend conversations based on familiar situations, stories and articles of increasing length and complexity. They will be able to formulate and respond to questions based on the reading selections and also write essays expressing their own thoughts and ideas. Students will use Rosetta Stone software to improve their conversational skills. Much of the course will be conducted in Spanish. Pre-requisite: Spanish 2


Spanish 4

The objective of this course is to encourage the students to use the language in expressing themselves orally and through writing. The foundational grammatical concepts learned in previous courses will be reviewed and applied. New vocabulary will be introduced constantly. A greater emphasis on conversation will be made in reaching the goal of proficiency. The course will be conducted in Spanish. Pre-requisite: Spanish 3

Latin 1

This course offers the opportunity to acquire a beginner’s level of proficiency in the basic skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing of Latin. The focus of the course will be to introduce vocabulary and English derivatives, as well as basic Latin grammar and syntax. The course will cover Chapters 1-16 of Wheelock’s Latin. Furthermore, the course will survey Greek and Roman mythology, using Edith Hamilton’s Mythology through the Trojan War

Latin 4

This course provides the opportunity to acquire proficiency in reading and understanding Latin poetry by reading and comprehending the greatest work of Latin literature, Virgil’s Aeneid. The course will also survey the Augustan era of Ancient Roman history, for that is the era in which Virgil creates his masterpiece.
